A downloadable game for Android

Game concept

The Lost Scroll is an augmented reality (AR) puzzle game that transforms your surroundings into a portal to Europe's past. Through a 19th-century painting, players can interact with the scene and solve puzzles by answering questions to unravel the story of Danish immigrants and reconstruct narratives about freedom and human dignity. By combining AR technology with historical investigation, the game immerses players in a cultural journey that recreates lost art and personal stories intertwined with European heritage. More than just a game, it is a tribute to the European Union's values of dignity and freedom, inviting players to step into history and awaken the forgotten history of migration through an innovative AR game.

The game connects past and present, utilizing paintings and migrant narratives to foster empathy and understanding of Europe's multicultural heritage. Through a focus on real-world storytelling and AR innovation, The Lost Scrolls serves as a tool for education and cultural preservation, ensuring that a silenced history resonates with modern audiences.

Cultural influence

We designed puzzles where players piece together the journey of the Danish immigrant ship Denmark—a vessel carrying hopeful migrants bound for America. After a tragic accident at sea, the passengers are rescued by a passing American ship. To save lives, the American captain jettisons all cargo into the ocean. As players unravel clues, they immerse themselves in this story, experiencing the migrants’ yearning for a better life and their struggle to uphold human dignity and rights in the face of adversity.

We educate players about migration history while fostering emotional connections to cultural heritage, encouraging reflection on how historical struggles resonate with contemporary European values. By blending AR technology with narrative storytelling, we invite players to step into history and witness firsthand the enduring significance of dignity, freedom, and hope.

Player’s Cultural Experience & Interaction

Players physically interact with the game world through Augmented Reality (AR), blending the real environment with virtual history. By decoding clues and engaging with the narrative, they restore the painting, culminating in an immersive AR experience that unveils the fully reconstructed artwork. This journey transforms passive learning into visceral participation—players don’t just witness history; they reclaim it, experiencing firsthand how cultural heritage shapes identity and values. The game deepens players’ understanding of the human stories embedded within historical art, bridging the past with personal connection.

By enabling players to place the controller on a real-world surface to reposition the virtual table, they can physically touch real books in Passthrough mode, enhancing both immersion and AR interactivity. Since it is difficult to clearly see physical objects through Passthrough on Quest 2, we supplemented the experience with essential visual elements, such as paintings, within the game. This improves overall visibility and guidance, ensuring that players can smoothly interact and explore.
